Rohit Bastola, 61

“I am thankful, people from all over came together to organise the LPEP survey program at my home. It was very difficult ages before, but there is medicine for the disease now and I am taking it. I wish this program will help prevent spreading of the disease. (Jiwan, Rohit Bastola’s son as the writer)”

In November 2017 I worked with Novartis Foundation and Netherlands Leprosy Relief photographing those affected by leprosy and those involved in their LPEP program - one that aims to prevent leprosy by targeting those in close proximity to those affected with drugs known to act as a profilaxis.

I made polaroids of individuals and asked them or a relative who was present to write something on the polaroids. The choice of what to write was theirs, though I asked them to make it relevant to the work that was going on. Often the person in question was illiterate, so a family member (usually someone young) would write on it on their behalf.
