“I went to several places to find out about the disease but after 5 years, it was diagnosed as leprosy in a nearby health post. And it’s a free treatment, I got assurance that it will be cured if medicine is taken regularly. There is nothing to be worried about.”
In November 2017 I worked with Novartis Foundation and Netherlands Leprosy Relief photographing those affected by leprosy and those involved in their LPEP program - one that aims to prevent leprosy by targeting those in close proximity to those affected with drugs known to act as a profilaxis.
I made polaroids of individuals and asked them or a relative who was present to write something on the polaroids. The choice of what to write was theirs, though I asked them to make it relevant to the work that was going on. Often the person in question was illiterate, so a family member (usually someone young) would write on it on their behalf.
