Statement

Okegbala is a leprosy community made up of three small settlements and a hospital. In many ways it is like a normal village, except almost everyone that lives there has been affected by leprosy, or someone in their family has.

I first visited in 2009 for two weeks, then five years later spent three weeks there. Having photographed around the settlements in detail, I wanted to give back some prints,  and it was suggested by one resident that I should photograph people just after church as everyone would be wearing their Sunday best. I attended church and announced that afterwards I would make one photograph of each person against the wall, next to the entrance. They can stand however they wish, and would receive a copy of the photograph.

All of these were shot on 5th April 2014.
